Can I update my Ipod without having to erase all of my data?

When I try to update my ipod on itunes it comes up with a box saying that I have to save everything on itunes because it is going to delete everything

When I try to update my ipod on itunes it comes up with a box saying that I have to save everything on itunes because it is going to delete everything. I don't want to do that Is there a way or another program that I can use that doesn't make me delete my data to update it? Please help!

or:it means delete all the data off your ipod to update then it will put everything back on there. but if you have like a movie or podcast or app that wasn't on your ipod but you have in your library it might redownload if you are using your computer to update your ipod. if its like a 4th gen then you can update it directly on the ipod if you have wifi
