or:I think it means that he tried to avoid something that he didn't really want to do but it ended up being part of his destiny. Like, for example, my friend really didn't want to do a certain sport (field hockey) and did everything in her power to prevent it until her parents finally gave in and told her she didn't have to do it. But, oppurtunites for her to join kept popping up even after tryouts ended so, she joined and is now the captain of the team. I know that's not a \"destiny\" per se, but it was a pretty important aspect of her year.
