Why did the West support Iraq in Iraq vs Iran war?

I am doing a study on the Iran-Iraq War (First Persian Gulf War). But besides all the stats and historical facts I can't find a reason why the West and USSR supporter the Iraqi's. As far as I have read the Iraqi's were the aggressors and the Iranians were purely defending their country. What was the reason that Iraq still got all the support?
