Health care leaders across the care continuum are urged to take collective and coordinated action toward a total systems approach to patient and workforce safety. Criminalizing medical errors ultimately puts more patients at risk because it discourages error-reporting and crucial learning opportunities to improve safety. A strong culture of safety can help leaders unify and engage both temporary and core staff in optimally serving patients, families, and one another. Without refortification, progress in safety will be limited as our attention moves to our next burning platform, and sustainability of progress will remain elusive. One health system built on its learning about improving hospital flow to address challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic such as safe staff redeployment.
