I don’t understand why I did it, but I chose to drink and became very intoxicated. I know what I was doing was displeasing to Allah and my parents, but I felt so alone and afraid. The devastation overwhelmed me and I could not bring myself to makes changes in my life.I just wanted the pain gone and when I drank the pain subsided, but after I slept I was so ashamed I had to bury my shame by drinking again. I was very intoxicated but I needed some help so I called the NISA Helpline. I am sure I was very difficult to understand and I don’t remember much of the first call. I called them again the next day and told them repeatedly “I’m lost, I don’t know what to do. I’m ashamed. I drank again. All I do is drink and sleep.”Things were so bad that I wasn’t eating and I became so weak that I had to go to the hospital, but Alhamdulillah, the calls to the helpline provided the support I needed to begin again. They listened to me, and encouraged me to call my parents and provided me resources for a rehab center where I’ve been admitted for 3 weeks and now have now have returned home.I am so grateful that Allahsubhanahu wa’ta’alaa has helped me and provided me with the support I needed through the helpline. It has given me a new chance at life and I have even begun to pray again.Real Stories, Real ImpactStarting university is an exciting journey that opens many doors for one's future. And as Rabia1 was preparing for this new life chapter, she lost a parent to cancer.   Rabia called Nisa Helpline because she needed someone to talk to and process what she was experiencing. Overcome with grief and the stress of financial hardships to support her family while attending university full-time led her to sleep deprivation and failing grades. Our peer counsellor acknowledged Rabia’s feelings and discussed ways she could prioritize her mental health by taking a break from school.
