2-Step Verification. Can I receive the code by email instead of SMS - text message?

I have a question, but unfortunately I have not been able to find the answer. I want to know if I can receive the verification code on my back up email, instead of my cell phone. Yesterday my phone died, and I wanted to sign into on an Ipad. The 2 step verification is not active on my back up email, which made me think that it would be useful if I could receive the verification code on my back up email instead of my cell phone in order to be able to sign in to my principal email with the 2 step verification.
Please let me know if you have a solution, thank you in advance!
