Are Beagles basically like cats (in temperament)?

I had two dogs before I got a beagle. I find the beagle the cutest and most adorable, BUT I don't find him too caring when it comes to people. The stereotype about the dog running to greet you at the door? He does it only if he thinks you have some food for him. I remember how I once cried by myself as a child, and my spaniel came to me and sat with me for hours, whining sadly. I'm not saying I want to have a dog to console me when I cry (this was 20 years ago), but it would be nice if this dog saw us as more than food-dispensers and people who get him to meet other dogs (that he DOES love). I wonder what people's experiences with the beagles are, and why it's not more known that they're NOT really people-oriented (unless you're dangling a piece of food). I loved having dogs for the bond, and I feel like I now have a cat (but a very demanding cat).

or:The thing about Beagles is that they one of the smartest breed of dogs and each one has their own personalities. I used to have two, and they sort of liked to do their own thing. Sometimes they would ignore me and sometimes they would come over for a pat- but mostly they liked to do their own thing (unless of course you had food). Beagles are a hunting dog- they'll always follow their noses.
