Best(safe, cheap, young) area to leave in when working in Washington DC downtown?

I am a young professional who is about to move to Washington DC and looking for place to leave. Leaving in downtown DC would be nice but unfortunately

I am a young professional who is about to move to Washington DC and looking for place to leave. Leaving in downtown DC would be nice but unfortunately, can not afford it. And I also would like to choose not owning a car due to related expenses such as gas, insurance, parking and so on. Checked craigslist and feel like going out of Washington DC is way to go to meet those conditions. Please help me out!

What I am looking for is....
- safe area with easy access to the downtown of Washington DC with public transportation
- prefer young atmosphere(shops, restaurants,,,) rather than super quiet residential area
- furnished condo suited for single professionals would be ideal.
- less than 1000$ per month(including hydro) is my target but always better as it goes down :-D

Thanks a lot and looking forward to hearing from you!
