Can you play disc-based video games on a Playstation 4 without an Internet connection?

I'm considering getting a PS4 because all my favourite games can be played on it and they're all disc-based. So I'm almost sure you can play games without internet. My only concern is a system update that they want you to get, I want to know if you can still play games on the PS4 without doing this update. I'm not interested in the social media, Internet browsing and such features of it, all I want to do is play games and they're all disc-based so can I play them without doing the day 1 update and other system updates? I won't ever be connecting the PS4 to the Internet.
