A customer walks into a store and buys something for $99.50. The customers pays with a $100 bill. They get 50 cents back. They say, "I don't want the change." And leaves the store.

Who does that 50 cents now belong to? If the clerk behind the counter uses that 50 cents for the next customer's transaction, is the clerk and the next customer stealing? What if the clerk uses that 50 cents to buy something, has the clerk now stolen money from the company? Should the clerk have placed that 50 cents in the drawer giving it to the company? Why would the company have more rights to that 50 cents that someone gave up compared to anyone else?

This has happend to me at a place I have worked at for 2 years with no history of anything negative and only positive reviews and raises. Because I used 50 cents that someone gave up, I am being fired.
