How do comic issues actually work?

Hey, i just started reading comics with the new DC rebirth. After i finished reading the superman issue #1, it said this story continues on Action Comics. Does this mean i have to get the action comics to continue or do i just wait for the next issue of rebirth? And how long does it take until the next issue is released (In general)?

or:Comic books started back in the late 1930s as collections of newspaper strips - many of which featured ongoing story lines to keep the reader coming back day after day for their three panels. When original characters were created for comic books, the publishers decided to go with stories that were complete in each issue. This would be the norm until the 1970s.
