I feel like a hopeless failure and that I wasted four years of my life taking a geology degree. I live in Calgary, supposedly a good place to find work in geology. I have been applying to every position I can find for over two years and have only landed three unsuccessful interviews. When I go for mock interviews, I am told that I interview well and that my resume is good. I am losing hope that I will ever find work and I am growing very tired of working dead end survival jobs. Everybody I go to for help says that they will do what they can, but after a few months they forget about me and now I am a 29 year old fry cook who simply does not want to wake up in the morning.

or:When I graduated in '92 I applied to BP and was working for them 6 weeks later. Was not a problem. I guess your problem is either you have no experience, have been applying for work that is above your level or simply do not have a good enough degree. Anything that is 2.2 or 3rd is not going to get you a job in the field. You need at least a 2.1, preferably a first.Either way a degree level qualification can get you degree level work, just not in geology. I'm surprised you've kept at it for so long, surely you'd have realised that maybe you should apply for other jobs and not be so narrow minded about the geology by now... ah well.

or:if you have to get on craigslist and research the possibilitys you might need some more education in the field i would further my education this looks good to employer it might require more education in the field then what you have some colleges help with work search that way you can get your foot in the door do you have a resume this might need to be updated some how work source might be another way of applying mabe you should go into something different as far as job experience goes what about a teaching degree in geology

or:I have stuck with it because I am interested in working in geology. Currently looking to go back to school for either a Masters degree or something completely different, like accounting or mineral land administration, but have been at school too long already and feel like this might be more time and money wasted. Have previous experience working as a summer intern with Nexen Inc. but was not hired after my internship because the company was being bought out by CNOOC and they did not take on any new grads. GPA's relatively good (3.5/4) but that does not seem to matter to employers. I haven't been solely applying to rock sniffer positions, have applied to labs, environmental consulting agencies, well servicing companies and field related positions, but I've basically been pounding sand. With oil at $56, I get that budgets are tight and companies are being bearish about who they will hire, but at the moment I feel like it doesn't matter what the market is like, I'm hooped and have to go back to school.

or:Thanks for your help everyone! Guess there's no need to kill myself after all!
