How long does it take a hamster to get used to their new home and start acting active and normal?

I got a new hamster the other day and all he's been doing in sleeping under his wheel. I know they're nocturnal but I hardly heard him last night and he's only eaten a little bit and not had any water that I've noticed and hasn't run on his wheel. I didn't know that you weren't supposed to pick them up when they are asleep and I've been trying to grab him from under his wheel so I don't know if I traumatized him but pulling him out from under his wheel on his first day in his new cage! Help
