I really want a smaller waist but I have a big butt and dont wanna lose it.. how do I get both?

I have really been wanting a smaller waist but i dont wanna lose my butt... ive been researching waist trainers but they look uncomfortable and im not even sure they will work i dont mind working out or dieting to achieve my goal of a small waist or hourglass figure but i DO NOT want to lose my butt in the process.. any ideas how i can do that?

or:I know they are awful but leg lifts are your friend. Lay on your back, keep your legs straight and lift your heels 3-6 inches off the floor then lift both legs at the same time, alternate legs and bicycle circles. Alternate these with Superman or swimmer. Lay on your stomach, stretch your arms out like you are Superman flying, lift your feet while keeping your legs straight then pulse (paddle) your hands/arms and feet/legs in short controlled motions up and down moving 3 to 6 inches. Leg lifts while lying on your side will also help. If you are wondering about how I would know; when I was active duty (Marine) my hips were 38 inches and my weight was 23 and I am 5'7 just like you. Don't just do sit-ups or crunches, you need to vary your workout and don't ignore the muscles in your lower back.
