Im 18 and he's 24 , is this too much of an age gap, we are friends currently but so much chemistry?

As I've mentioned above there is quite a big age difference between us for the stages of our lives, however I cannot get him off my mind, we talk constantly and sometimes it just feels like we are together. We constantly say we are friends but then we discuss future plans and he always brings up how good we would be together. Everyone says when I come into a room his face lights up and he always immediately comes to me and hugs me, not always but sometimes we arrange to meet up and we have the best times ever. We literally have never fallen out and have talking constantly for almost a year , he's not seeing anybody and neither am I, and if after a night out he always tries to find out if I got with anyone , one time I was joking and wouldn't tell him I hadn't and he started to get mad and jealous then he text apologizing for it , he tells me I'm his best friend and often speaks of me in his future, I mean, there is chemistry between us, I can see it myself , we are like 2 puppies in love but the age difference is an important thing for me , this guy is amazing he would actually do anything for me ,he once drove me 2 hours home after I missed the bus , in fact anyone, and he treats me with great respect as I do him, it would be weird to stop talking to him and probably hurtful for us both , but is this the best option? I've been hurt in a past relationship and he encourages me that it would be different 'if I found the right person' by which I think he means him. I've grown fond of this guy but I'm scared of getting hurt and that the age gap is too much , help?!
