In Tennessee, do I need to get my permit before I get my license at 18 years old?

I am 18 years of age and I haven't gotten my permit yet, could I just go down to the DMV with everything I would need to get my license? Or would I still have to hold and carry my permit for a time? Keep in mind this is in Tennessee and laws and jurisdictions go through Tennessee's laws. I couldn't find anything online so thank you so much for any assistance.
