They sign an agreement to give them full control for the contract span 1-2 years usually.If it's a blah domain and renewal is coming up, let it go if it's less than 5 years old. If it's more than 5yo then I'd consider keeping it. If you want to use it in the future, the age will come into play with SEO.I hope this helps.
