or:A pressure setting is one where the traditional settings that hold the gemstone in place are not present and only the pressure of the gold against the stone holds it in place. Usually a goldsmith will put claws or a bezel around a stone to ensure it is held in place physically by the folded gold. With a pressure setting a \"sprung\" effect is created between the gem and the 2 sides of the ring that press against it which is what holds it in place. This type of setting is usually only advised with Diamonds as they are hard enough to withstand the pressure. Most colored stones are not suitable.
