Make time pass quicker at work?

I am a student. I'm currently working in a convenience store to help with my living costs. It is a nightmare of a job. On a busy day we probably get around 4 or 5 customers (in 4 hours).
I work for 4 hours 4 days a week. I know that really isn't much, but it drags on for what seems like forever. It feels like a huge wast of my time. I always think about assignments I could be doing or improving on. I've even tried looking at them whilst in work but my boss has prohibited it.
I'm looking for things I can do to help pass the time, they can be work related. But if they're not, I don't want it to be something that could get me fired. Talking to co-workers isn't an option. The guy I work with hardly speaks any English, so our exchanges are minimal as it is. I even tried learning his language but he thought I was trying to mimick him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've even thought about quitting, but that is not an option right now if I want to maintain financial stability
