About a month ago I adopted a 4 year old terrier/Chihuahua mix. He is really sweet and friendly and completely submissive towards me and my family. He is also really friendly towards people and children. HOWEVER When ever he sees another dog he barks, growl, lunges and try to charge and attack the dog. My terrier dog does not even respond to my commands or disapproval and continues to try to get at the other dogs. What can I do? Is dog training gonna work? Or is this more of a socializing thing where I should bring to met more dogs because there have been times when other dog owners allowed there dogs to approach mine and then after like 5 minutes of interaction my dog seem to be able to relax a bit. We were even able to take a walk with the other dog no problem.

please help and give advice on what to do? Because it does not seem dog training is the correct way but instead dog interaction and socialization is the correct way. please give advice I really need help!!!!

or:THis is defiantly a socializing issue. Many times (especially when adopting) you dont know the dogs background. I would try to see if you have a family friend and their dog come over. Make sure to keeo them on leashes (I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH). then try to introduce them. You could even go on a walk and try walking on other sides of the road and get closer as time progresses. Never put the two dogs right together at the start. It sounds like your dog probably has'nt been around many other dogs before you and he will need time to warm up. If you have the time and energy to be stern and help him he should learn to be able to cope with other dogs around! Good Luck to you and your furry friend!

or:I would try finding a dog (similar size so yours isn't intimidated) who is well trained, and help them both have a positive experience with each other. This doesn't mean make them play, I mean, feed them their favorite treat together, or pet them in their favorite place. It's also important to make sure the dogs aren't face to face. This can be a bit scary. Instead, have the dogs laying down, or sitting next to each other. Start off farther apart, then you can slowly move them closer. This way, the know there's another dog, but they don't feel like they have to fight, just sit.And lastly, if either dog get scared, angery, uncomfortable, etc, don't make them stay. With socializing, the dog should progress at his/her own speed.
