My chihuahua goes and hides under our beds and won't come out?

I have a 3 lb -6 year old chihuahua that we rescued and we have had for about 1 1/2 years. For the last 6 months at night he will not sleep with us and goes and hides under the bed. Or when he thinks we are leaving he will hide under the bed. Why does he do this and how can we fix this problem? When we first got him he was so loving and would sleep under the covers and snuggle. Now, he will only once in a while. I also have a 12 year old poodle that weighs 5 lbs. She is almost blind and deaf but happy. She wants to be by him but he usually will leave. Are we not making him happy?
