I know they are both high end vehicles but which is less likely to constitute less of a bother with quality maintenance along the years and of course i will be buying used..

or:As an individual who works and has worked on both Mercedes and BMW, I will say STAY AWAY from Mercedes if you are looking for maintenance economy and overall longevity. Mercedes severely over-engineers their vehicles only to still operate inferior to BMWs, and with that aspect comes more failing parts and work to be done. Also, I have not seen a single 2004-2007 Mercedes that could outlast its equivalent BMW. For ultimate economy and longevity, choose the 328i, as the 2007/08 models have the awesome naturally aspirated inline-6 motor that is also valvetronic, so it is very fuel efficient, perfectly powerful, and will last 300k miles with standard maintenance. Of course, with both brands any maintenance will be pricey, but beware to not skimp or go cheap when you do. If you drive a Mercedes/BMW, treat it like one by giving it factory spec parts/fluids or better. Trust me, there is a reason it says BMW approved, you had better be sure to do your homework before going with non-OEM parts and be sure that they are in fact better, which are usually even more expensive anyway. The 335i is very sporty, inline-6 twin turbo, which gets 305-335hp stock and is quite nifty! However maintenance is more of a bother, due to direct injection and the turbos, as well as carbon build up. Also, I would bet money the 328i motors will be pumping much longer than the 335i motors will due to the lower stress on all the parts. I'd say 200k expected from a 335i before major breakdowns, and 300k+ from the 328i. Knowing what I do now, I will never again buy anything but BMW! They are still superiorly engineered, compared to all others.
