Suitable dog breed for a uni student?

I'm a uni student and I want to get a dog. Before anyone says that I won't have the time for a dog, I'll tell you now I will. Im able to afford one and I'm planning to get a puppy during the summer break so I'll be able to be around to train it etc. Once I start uni, I'll be gone for 5 hours a day max. I go jogging in the morning so I'd like a breed that has the right energy for that. The dog will get at least 2.5 hours of exercise a day and I plan to do some dog sports with it too e.g agility, flyball. So far the breeds that I like a GSD's, huskies (but I'm not keen on the barking/howling), Rottweilers (but my landlord won't allow them) and Japanese Akita Inu's (but I don't like the fact that they cannot be trusted off leash). So clearly I'm interested with large/medium breed dogs. Any suggestions?

I am glad you have put alot of thought into getting a dog! They are a really big responsibility and require lots of work. Now to my opinion on the breeds you choseGerman Shepherd-They are all in all very loyal and hardworking dogs with that said they require ALOT of work and training! A breed like this is very good at agility work (ex:running, frisbee,fetch, and more). Keep in mind your landlord may allow them now but most apartments and landlords do not allow this breed! If this will be your forever home or atleast until you buy then I say its a YES.Huskies- Now I do have a husky of my own so I have some experience with this breed. I love him very much BUT he is a winer, howler, and much more. These dogs all in all are big babies and want to be treated as such! Also, he was a huge CHEWER, this breed will not be the one you would want to even leave alone for an hour because they become bored and a very destructive! I really don't think the breed is the best to run with unless you live in a cold area because of their coat. But if you think you can handle all of that go for it!Rottweiler- Number one if they are not allowed at your house I would not choose this breed. They most times are not allowed at apartments or houses. They are very loyal and protective. Very good dogs in general but really need a backyard!Japenese Akita Inu- I really do not know too much about this breed as they are not common in my area. But to say they cannot trusted off leash might not be true. Honestly every dog has their own personality. If you start your dog in training from the time they are a puppy and stay consistent then you should have no issue with this!Other breeds I believe will be suitable for you: labrador retriever (very loyal, energetic, great running partner), Australian Cattle dog (good dog for running, high energy), dalmation (beautiful dog, good runner, high energy).Hope this could help you! or:My wife and I have a Catahoula, it is a herding dog, super friendly and very smart. Ours is 80 lbs. just to let you know they are high energy. Our Catahoula is 8 years old now but still gets mistaken for a younger dog. She is very loyal and loving, goes many places off leash because she is so trust worthy.
