I live in a house that's 10-15 years old. For the 4 years we've lived here, we keep hearing two noises, which almost always sound the same: two random knocks in a row and a loud banging noise (which is also random). These happen pretty much daily, mostly towards/at night, and seem to be coming from the basement. Can anybody tell me what these are?

or:they might be possoms, rats, mice, or any other kind of rodent, it might also be, when the house cools it gets smaller cause of the cold, and in the heat it expands (or is it the other way around) so the wood grinding together makes creaking noises and stuff. but its highly doubtful anyone is in the basement (unless its a family member playing tricks on you)
or:Agree with NekoNeko....Another thing to consider is...Do you have a water heater or similar??Or even water pipes in the basrment ???Sometimes these make noises but maybe its just the usual expanding with heat etc...
