What can I do to make my hair less puffy and more straight, and soft?

So right now my hair seems to be very just puffy like on everywhere except the top parts of my hair where the roots are. My roots are very soft, straight and smooth, but the rest of my hair as it goes down is so puffy, it makes my hair look weird bc the top is straight and the rest is just poof. I brush my hair and I think it makes it more puffy but I can't just not brush my hair or it gets really bad knots in it. So I was just wondering if anyone knows how I can fix this and make my hair like straight and smooth and soft everywhere. Maybe some recipes or masks or something I cld use?? My hair isn't damaged, I nvr use heat and I haven't dyed it in like 2 or 3 years. I do wear it in buns all the time bc of how puffy it looks... cld that b why it's like this???

or:Try slightly wetting it before brushing, if you have wavy hair it will get very puffy when brushed dry.
