My father is one of the laziest people you would ever meet. He does not exercise, he does not golf, he does not like doing anything. In fact, the only thing he works on weekly is his garden but we live in the Midwest so that's only 6 months of the year.

He does not like his job. In fact he hates his job. When he comes home from work, he is so exhausted from work and from having a few beers with a friend that he eats dinner and wants to fall asleep watching TV. The only thing that keeps him busy is his job. When he comes from work, he has this horrible sedentary lifestyle that has actually affected his health to the point of 3 minor strokes and a heart attack. He is considering retiring next year and I'm afraid that he will continue this sedentary lifestyle but instead of just after work, it will be all day and that is where I know he will become bored and eventually get more ill.

My question is has what are some suggestions for him to occupy his time during his retirement and I'm not saying full-time, but some part time jobs.

or:You can tell him point blank that retired men who don't find something to do almost always die within two years after retirement, maybe three. So he can either find something or start getting his estate in order.

or:I understand your concern with your father's health, but remember its his health and his choice. The best way to get him active is to join him. Take up a hobbie with him. Go fishing, walk the mall before it opens. Are there any grandchildren? Let him help watch them. One of the biggest reasons why an older person becomes withdrawn is because of depression. See if he will let you tag along to his next check up then pull the doctor aside and address your concerns.
