What do I need to look for in a recorder for recording purposes?

I have a security receiver. Its yellow plug plugs into a digital TV for live surveillance. However, I would like to record what is showing on the TV.

What do I need to look for in a recorder which will allow this? Does the recorder only record to it's own harddrive or can I use a dvd to record directly onto?

or:When you say security receiver are you talking about a DVR ( Digital Video Recorder)? Most cameras hook up to a DVR which has a hard drive and in turn can also send a video signal to an external monitor and or a RCA out to a TV depending on the recorder. Almost all DVRs of today always the user to connect via intranet and internet to see live as well as recorded activity. Some DVRs have built in DVD burners. However most often they also have a USB slot where you can download your files to a memory card to work with them on your computer. You may also transfer files from the DVR to your computer over the network. Hope this helps
