At the end, Homura and Shizuku said their goodbyes to Rukia before going limp (which made me cry everytime) but what happened to them? Aren't they already in the "afterlife" aka Soul Society so they're already dead? I'm so confused guys please help this question has been stuck in my mind since the movie release long ago.

or:I believe that a soul in the soul society can still experience death even though they are already dead. In the Rescue Arc of Bleach, Rukia was sentenced to be killed because she transferred her Soul Reaper powers to Ichigo, but before she could be executed, she was saved by Ichigo. So, Homura and Shizuka could have died even though they are already dead.
