This common but strange event illustrates that when a beam of light passes from one medium to another, such as from water to air, it does not continue on in a straight line; it is bent except when it hits the boundary perpendicularly. This is what scientists call refraction. The extent to which the light is refracted depends on the mediums\u2014air, water, oil, glass, and so on\u2014and on the angle of incidence, that is, the angle between the light ray and the vertical at the point of entry.The human eye, a good example of this, has no problem with different colors of light. Its automatic focusing system is fast and efficient. It can see in three dimensions. It can detect millions of gradations of light and shades of color.
