or:If you are in 8th through 12th grade your school or a neighboring school might have a FIRST robotics team which means that each year you will get to work on a robot for a competition. You will get to use power tools such as a mill or a lathe and mentors and other team members will help you. If you don't want to do that, I would agree that line following is a good idea, perhaps by using an arduino.
