What would've been the allure of totalitarianism for the people of 1930s?

Did they simply hate the system of "parliamentarianism"? or did they think communism or fascism would give them something new, or improve the country? Overall, I am wondering what were the reasons why the idea totalitarianism became so popular?

or:Once upon a time the Jews escaped from Egypt and traveled to a land that had been promised to them. When they got there, God commanded them not to have a king, and no law enforcement in the areas between cities. After about 150 years the people were feeling quite prosperous, so they demanded a king. After that they were conquered and taken into slavery. The basic problem is that people are rebellious. Even when they know what is right, they prefer to follow their own ideas. That never works well, so they go looking for ways to force things the way they want them. That is when you see legislatures trying to set the value of pi and the prices of commodities. The only function of a government is to prevent any other group from taking control. the duty of a citizen is to control his government. That is why governments always eventually treat their citizens as enemies of the state.
