Why are the majority of corner lot homes made of brick as opposed to vinyl siding?

I've noticed, here in Ontario Canada, that most corner lot homes are brick, with no vinyl siding while the rest of the homes on the street are mostly brick fronts with vinyl siding. Is it a building code? Is it because most of them were model homes originally? (probably not, as this is still true of older homes, before "model homes" were utilized).
