or:Because their gills are specially designed so that oxygen from in the water can diffuse into their lungs through a membrane which is in between the water and their lungs. The fish cannot do this with air so after several minutes of their bodies being deprived of oxygen they die.

or:fishes will get oxygen from water only so if they are removed, they will die
