Why do you put tofu in water?

I was suggested to put tofu in water after I opened the wrapper to keep the tofu fresh for a longer time. The tofu wont spoil. I am not sure, why this

I was suggested to put tofu in water after I opened the wrapper to keep the tofu fresh for a longer time. The tofu won't spoil. I am not sure, why this works for tofu, but not for other groceries as well.

or:well i would think it keeps from drying out and being in the water keeps it from loosing its flavor doesn't spoil has something in it that allows for portions as well as no mold its kept fresh not loosing its tenderized
