Why does Democracy seem to be failing?

There seems to be a growing amount of visible and even militant protests by the pro and anti this and that. For example, pro and anti life, pro and anti religion, pro and anti our leaders and such.

Is not the root cause to be found in the election process? You usually end up with two main parties in opposition for major elections. They both campaign at huge costs and much time and effort to show why they are the best and the other side are dumb, if not worse. It goes on for quite a while and thus tears the nation apart in views

The first thing the elected person says, let us all now unite when that stands no chance of happening. The losing party, now in opposition, generally does its best to to hamper what the ruling party tries to achieve so it looks bad. The ruling party tries to undo what the oppoition did last time it was in power, or at least the things it most objects to.

This is supposed to be a recipe for success? It is supposed to unite the people so there is peace and harmony amongst them? Or is it more a deliberate divide and thus control technique? Is not what happens at the top being mirrored downwards? Thoughts?
