Why does he keep telling me he just wants to be friends?

I have a private vocal instructor. I'm 35, he's 60. He's never been married.
I have a boyfriend. I have never hit on this man, yet he is constantly reminding me that we're just friends and he's glad we have such a safe situation. I'll be talking opera, and he'll launch into how he's glad I'm ONLY his friend, how that's all we're meant to be, and that he has no time for a girlfriend.
He's a great instructor, but the friend reminder makes me uncomfortable, as I've NEVER, ever made a pass at him. He gets downright defensive with it.
Any idea as to WHY he has to go through this every time we have a lesson?

or:i think he is doing that because he is convincing his self that your just a friend for him he is in denial that he feels something for you. Maybe its because he knows that you has a boyfriend that is one way of defense mechanism
