Will the plastic wrap at the airport ruin an antique leather suitcase?

My grandma has an old apricot coloured leather suitcase that I want to bring home with me, but the buckles aren't very sturdy and it has a crack in it so I was hoping to be able to wrap it to help keep it closed. Will the plastic wrap take the colour off or ruin the finish? My grandma seems to think it will.

or:Pack it in a cardboard box and ship it by Fedex or UPS. If you wrap it in plastic, the goos at the airport will tear it off, and not very carefully. They might fine you for inconveniencing them. Personally, I would not take anything on a flight with me; I would ship it to myself. But then, I would not be flying, because I refuse to be searched without a warrant.

or:I know I posted this question and even though I didn't receive a positive response I did it anyway. I know Jewels Verne said it was a bad idea and maybe that's just because they are in the States or something but I had no problems with wrapping it and bringing it on a trans Canada flight.

or:yes,it will damage the suitcase's material.
