For one thing, you would not be allowed to cross the border with that much cash, so you need to make arrangements with some bank to transfer money to you when you need some. You also don't want to carry enough cash to be worth getting robbed. Travelers generally do not carry more than the price of a few meals, and they plan on working (farm labor) to pay their way.
