Curated and produced by AD founder Justin Gage, Atenção! Novos Sons do Brasil is the stuff that’s scarcely left our turntable in the last few years, a compilation of artists who seem to be working both independently and collectively, presenting a kaleidoscopic mash-up of sounds and styles rooted firmly in the present, all laced with loving doses of classic Brasiliana. Despite all the aesthetic trappings of an acid-folk gem on the cover, Belladonna lives in the venn between by Miles Davis’ dark, post-Bitches Brew fusion and the heady prog jamming of Soft Machine and Islands-era King Crimson. Four hours of freeform sounds from the Aquarium Drunkard crew. M. Takara :: Tigre TristePosted on May 13, 2022May 11, 2022Whether ordering glitchy breaks and riffs, or sampling the noise of kitchen utensils and of a cavaquinho (the traditional mini-guitar of samba), M. Takara’s Puro Osso produces a certain ambience both reminiscent of Tom Zé and the electronic prayers found in the work of Boards of Canada (or, more recently, in Kara-Lis Coverdale or Ana Roxanne). First & Last: Japanese Private Press, Vol. 4Posted on May 12, 2022May 10, 2022This fourth volume of First And Last features a menagerie of tunes for the early days of summer (with seven of the twelve songs culled from EPs), from psych-pop to breezy bossa nova, wrapping up with a grip of introspective folk. Haruomi Hosono :: Music For Films 2020-2021Posted on May 12, 2022May 12, 2022Slowing down? If you’ve paid even half attention to the prolific vocation of Haruomi Hosono you know it’s not in the cards. Long before Shoplifters made waves at Cannes, composition work had long been a staple of the musician’s repertoire. Woodbury to discuss the new record, the band’s history, that infamous scene in High Fidelity, the Belle and Sebastian cruise and much more. David Michael Moore :: Flatboat River Witch: 1994 – 2015Posted on May 11, 2022May 10, 2022At age seventy-one, David Michael Moore is a Genuine American Freak. An artist and woodworker, living in Rosedale, Mississippi, its mighty river flowing half a mile from his home, Moore has been quietly recording a potent, homespun Americana—tinged with eastern tonalities and new-age ambient passages—for the past three decades. A compendium of these unique and eccentric sounds comes to us in the tape Flatboat River Witch: 1994 – 2015, released via the Bloomington-based Ulyssa imprint. Velly Joonas :: Stopp, Seisku Aeg!Posted on May 10, 2022May 10, 2022An enigmatic figure in Estonian music, Velly Joonas is a diverse and prolific audiovisual artist who has worked within many mediums, including painting, poetry, and a surprisingly diverse set of musical genres. “Stopp, Seisku Aeg!” was recorded as a demo for the amateur band Vstretša to support a performance permit application as an example of what they would play. Joonas suggested covering “I See Red!” by Anni-Frid Lyngstad of ABBA, rewriting the lyrics herself in Estonian for Vstretša’s version. The result is a funky, soulful jam, blending synths, strings, and Joonas’s ethereal voice into a groove that far eclipses the original. Alice Coltrane :: Yogaville 1993Posted on May 10, 2022May 10, 2022Beautiful Alice Coltrane artifacts keep popping up, whether in official guise (last year’s Turiya Sings collection) or unofficial bootleg situations (the astonishing Berkeley 1972 double LP). Somewhere in between is this recently unearthed video of Coltrane performing at the Yogaville complex in Buckingham, Virginia, in the 1990s. Lyle Lovett :: The Aquarium Drunkard InterviewPosted on May 10, 2022May 10, 2022It’s been a decade since the last time Lyle Lovett released a new album, and 12th of June works as both an introduction as much as it does to catch up on the ten years passed. “I wanted this to be a proper introduction to me and the Large Band if people haven’t heard us, or just something that feels familiar to people that do.” Load MoreThe AD InterviewSidecar: Email NewsletterLagniappe SessionsTransmissions PodcastMixtapes  The AD InterviewSidecar: Email NewsletterLagniappe SessionsTransmissions PodcastMixtapesTwitterInstagramFacebook Aquarium Drunkard AboutContactBack to Top
