A neurobiologist using invertebrate model systems to study the neurobiology of behavior: how do brains decide what to do next? More Prof. Dr. Björn [email protected] Contact Information: Universität Regensburg Institute of Zoology - Neurogenetics Universitätsstrasse 31 93040 Regensburg, Germany Phone: +49 941 943 3117 Collective action or individual choice? (PDF) When flies are in groups, they maintain their individuality when faced with choices between light or dark situations. However, their choices are not always the same: the flies decide spontaneously, but maintain an average individual preference. Differential dominance (PDF) Some mutations in pleiotropic genes (genes that affect multiple phenotypes), can be dominant in one phenotype, recessive in another and intermediate in a third. A mutation in the last synthesis enzyme for octopamine in Drosophila shows such differential dominance. FoxP gene expression and function (PDF) The Drosophila FoxP gene is expressed exclusively in neurons, but cannot be found in a brain area called the mushroom bodies. Knocking the gene out with CRISPR/Cas9 leads to a multitude of behavioral deficits. Why did the moth fly into the flame? (PDF) The tendency of insects to approach a light is not a hardwired behavior. Instead, flies first evaluate the status of their flight apparatus, before deciding whether to aproach or to avoid light. Tweets by @brembs portal to entire brembs.net site
