[email protected] Burchell’s winning poems:One Fish, Two Fish, Girl Fish, Boy FishI. One FishSometimes I wish I’d cut off my hair by my own hand, stuck the soil-colored strands into a used plastic grocery bag(reducing, reusing, recycling)Threw it into a river, let the evidence float away on a currentMaybe the bag will become someunfortunate fish’s last supperBut dear God, at least I’d be aliveIf all I have to do to survive is secondhandedly stranglea fish, then I’d gladly take on the title of killerI’ve already murdered my past self:she’s at the bottom of a murky lake now(I haven’t been to a lake in years)II. Two FishMy mother had three children, braided her iron spirit into our hairWhen we were just ripening, she’d take useverywhere, anywhere, just to get out of the house(apples never straying far from the tree)One of our most frequented placeswas a paradise of a koi pond hiddeninside a health center or hospital or…(I wasn’t particular about that sort of thing a decade ago)But we each chose our favorite fish, tried to find them every timeMy mother’s pointing finger led our eyes to themMy favorite was an inseparable pair; their markings burning softlythrough the dappled surface of the waterI rarely needed my mother’s murmurs to identify them, for their uniqueness was what I wished to copy, something to make me stand out from my sisters(I didn’t know then I would grow upto look nothing like them)But lifespans become cramped within the confines of the indoorsAnd as a shadow fell over the pond, I could not find my pair of fishI was inconsolable on the inside; the only crack in my façadewas a tremble of my lips and a stone in my throatWithin a few seconds, my mother pointed out two beautiful fish, claiming that they were my favorites, childDid she craft her lie to ease the trouble on my face, orhad she never paid enough attention to know the difference? That was the first lie she told me that I did not believeThe first lie that fell apart like a sandcastlebuilt too close to the tide’s reaching fingersIII. Girl FishThere are plenty of fish in the seabut how many girl fish are there? How many girl fish are there that like other girl fishthat might be boy fish?I cast my line, wait for eternity, reel it in,feel my skin burn and peel under the yellow smudge of the sunEmpty-handed, I change my bait, becoming desperateI cut off my fingers one by one, hoping they like my ring finger bestImpale the digit with the hook, then cast my line againPerhaps if I tempt them with the right part of my flesh they will biteBut girl fish only steal my bait for themselvesI offer these slices of skin just to be robbedNever learning, always hoping the outcome might changeGirl fish slip out of your hands before you can get a gripSwimming upstream as you are swept into the rushing tideNever yours to treasure, to admireThough they’ll take whatever skin you offer upIV. Boy FishI observe boys like they are rare fishand I am the most dedicated ichthyologistin the last aquarium left standingI watch the way they arrange their legs when they sit at desks(only crossed if at the ankle,or wide open,or with an ankle on an opposing knee)And how they position their hands when they’re talking(shoved deep into pockets,or clasped at one wrist,or all over me)And how their clothes tumble down their torsos(flatly across their chest to their stomach)And yet I’m the one encased in hollow glassStrangers staring at me like I’m going extinctThe water is pooling around my knees, enticing me to sink like a stoneI am the freak show, I am the exhibitand my captor is my bodySecondary Succession(n.) when organisms return to living in an area that was destroyedby events like floods, wildfires, or breakupsIf a tree falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it,is it even on fire? Are its veiny leavesslowly curling into char? Are its twisting branchescracking off, adding fuel to the fire, the most vicious of cycles? If you’re not around to call me beautiful,am I still a vessel of beauty?Or is it only someone else’s eyes that cancreate my allure? Because my toothpaste-spattered bathroom mirrorplays tricks on me so oftenSo was the only thing that made me handsomeyour lovely, lying lips? But now, you have left me without the heat of themSo maybe I’m on fire, maybe I’m notMaybe you’re a liar, maybe I amYou witnessed when I fell in love with you; I heard it when you fell out of love with me:the melody of a heartbeat slowly steadying; then flatlining altogether as you rip the cuff offI hope I didn’t cut off your blood flow, darlingLook: my knuckles are red, too,I held on so tightly to your fire that the pain was all-consuming until it was just burning me rawI tried to cup you in my palms like you were cool water but my hands were imperfectly made, see,You slipped out of my grasp like an oil spill while my heart was doused in acetoneAn Ode to SeleneMy sister and I, we watched the moon riseMarveling at how quickly it leapt above the horizonI said it was orange, she argued for yellowbut the honey shade dripped on, oblivious to our squabblingOur neighbors wandered by us, peeking curiouslyat two kids crouched in a ditch, eyes fixed on the heavensThey couldn’t find the cloudy marble rolling around in the skyuntil our murmured directions guided their gazeMy father meandered down the street with an amber bottleswinging, pendulum-like in his loose grasp, his eyes unfocused and his embrace warmThe moon above commanded silence, a quiet awebroken not even by the croak of frogs or hum of insectsFor nature gives the moon the stage when she is full and golden,a handful of minutes in a pair of fortnightsUntil she breaks above the tree line, snapping us out of our trance, and all fall back into our livesInauguration Celebration of Dr. Felicia L. Maria Kesisoglou, a ninth-grader at New Hope-Solebury High School, and a resident of New Hope, won first place for her story, “Cat’s Cradle.” Bethany Conover, a sophomore at Council Rock South High School, and a resident of Holland, took second place for her story, “What could have happened.” Adam Dombrowski, a sophomore at Pennsbury High School, and a resident of Morrisville, was awarded third place for his story, “No Chances.” The winners’ stories were selected from a field of 67 entries this year. The winners will receive certificates, as well as awards for $200, $100, and $50, respectively. The contest is funded by Bucks County Community College, and receives support from the Department of Language and Literature. The final judge was Joseph Shakely, a professor in the department.Of Kesisoglou’s the first-place story, Shakely wrote, “With the first line—‘A phone rings in an empty house late at night’—a sense of foreboding draws the reader into this well-crafted tale of supernatural horror. The story unfolds almost entirely in the form of a message left on the answering machine in that empty house, a message that is both a warning and a plea for help from the self-described ‘shut-in next door.’ The author’s deft handling of characterization, even within the confines of the tight narrative setup, has us believing the caller and experiencing a growing sense of dread that peaks with an ending that in retrospect seems inevitable but that nevertheless lands with a punch. The meaning of the title, too, becomes clear with that ending and provides a chilling metaphor to make the story linger in the reader’s mind.”Conover’s second-place story, Shakely said, is “a mix of fantasy and surrealism, told in the first person by a would-be novelist experiencing writer’s block. Her stop in an odd book shop with an equally odd proprietor launches her into something that seems halfway between dream and reality. The author of this story creates a narrator who remains believable and engaging whether musing on her fate, conversing awkwardly with an eccentric stranger, or struggling to get her bearings in an alternate reality. The genre-bending introduction of notes of mysticism and existentialism elevate this story well above the mere adventure tale.”In regard to Dombrowski’s story, the judge noted, “‘No Chances’ is an ambitious story that manages within just a few pages to evoke the dystopian visions of Orwell, Burgess, and Serling. Its opening is calculatedly disorienting, reflecting the situation of the narrator. We don’t lose patience with this minimal exposition, though, because we are experiencing it just as the narrator/protagonist is and because the author has a good sense of what information to introduce, when to introduce it, and how to accomplish all this in a way that seems natural and organic to the story. The emphasis on setting—sterile, cold, and claustrophobic—provides an effective backdrop for the emergence of the ideas at the core of ‘No Chances.’”The winners will read from their works at a celebration at the college on Weds.
