A Boston Public Schools teacher was hospitalized last week after a student threw “boiling hot” ramen-noodle water at her face and the school’s principal did not call 911, according to a report from the Boston Police Department.The student was charged as a juvenile with aggravated assault after the May 5th incident at the McKinley Middle School.According to the police report obtained by Boston 25 News, the boy was trying to heat up ramen noodles in a school microwave, and he tried to put a textbook in with the noodles. When it comes to a more modern understanding of shapewear, however, the seamless and smooth silhouette that became popular with the rise of Spanx in the late 20th century is likely more familiar.That's when the materials used to create shapewear, such as Lycra and knits, and the way they functioned, were "transformative" in comparison to what had existed on the market before. "That really ties into modern conceptions of beauty, where essentially, we've gone from taking up space through these garments [widening hips, for example, which was fashionable at one time] to not taking up as much space," Harrington says. "The trend now is to have more of a toned body, more of a muscular body. We often see a lot of bodies that are perceived to have plastic surgery, as shapewear today is about giving the silhouette of such, which is a very different conceptualization of shapewear than it might have been in like the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s."Throughout the evolution, the messaging has remained the same. "It was still about the idea of giving you a figure that was more in line with beauty standards of the time," Harrington explains. "It will transform your body and will smooth your silhouette under clothing."With the launch of Yitty, however, Lizzo says she aimed to create something new. That's the topic of this film (released in cinemas in February, now on Netflix), as a gay cop (Rajkummar Rao) and a lesbian teacher (Bhumi Pednekar) agree to marry, but then their family's demand for children, and their respective love lives, create complications.I have an affinity for Bollywood movies -- I love the extravagance and confess that South Asian men really do it for me -- so I've seen several of the recent attempts to portray gay characters and I think this is one of the best so far, and should be easily accessible to Western audiences -- yes, the running time is long (2 and 1/2 hours), but the script is packed with rich character detail; there are songs on the soundtrack, but only one production number, realistically set at a wedding; conforming to Indian censors, there's no kissing or sex, but the affection between two men or two women is effectively indicated. The sense of oppression-but-hope in a deeply homophobic society took me back to my own youth in the 80s in the US, and a coming out scene near the end of the film admittedly had me shedding a tear or two. From 2015 to 2019 I interviewed gay men from the Midwest and West Coast regions of the United States. Part of that fieldwork was focused on understanding the role Grindr plays in LGBTQ life.A slice of that project – which was recently published in the journal Deviant Behavior – explores the way gay men rationalize their sexual racism and discrimination on Grindr.The gay men I connected with tended to make one of two justifications.The most common was to simply describe their behaviors as “preferences.” One participant I interviewed, when asked about why he stated his racial preferences, said, “I don’t know. I just don’t like Latinos or Black guys.”That user went on to explain that he had even purchased a paid version of the app that allowed him to filter out Latinos and Black men. His image of his ideal partner was so fixed that he would rather – as he put it – “be celibate” than be with a Black or Latino man. (During the 2020 #BLM protests in response to the murder of George Floyd, Grindr eliminated the ethnicity filter.)Sociologists have long been interested in the concept of preferences, whether they’re favorite foods or people we’re attracted to. Preferences may appear natural or inherent, but they’re actually shaped by larger structural forces – the media we consume, the people we know and the experiences we have. In my study, many of the respondents seemed to have never really thought twice about the source of their preferences. When confronted, they simply became defensive.“It was not my intent to cause distress,” another user explained. “My preference may offend others … [however,] I derive no satisfaction from being mean to others, unlike those who have problems with my preference.”The other way that I observed some gay men justifying their discrimination was by framing it in a way that put the emphasis back on the app. These users would say things like, “This isn’t e-harmony, this is Grindr, get over it or block me.”Since Grindr has a reputation as a hookup app, bluntness should be expected, according to users like this one – even when it veers into racism. Responses like these reinforce the idea of Grindr as a space where social niceties don’t matter and carnal desire reigns.While social media apps have dramatically altered the landscape of gay culture, the benefits from these technological tools can sometimes be difficult to see. Some scholars point to how these apps enable those living in rural areas to connect with one another, or how it gives those living in cities alternatives to LGBTQ spaces that are increasingly gentrified.In practice, however, these technologies often only reproduce, if not heighten, the same problems and issues facing the LGBTQ community. It was different than what I had imagined in my head of what it was,” says Featherstone. “I had not sensed that it could be so subtle, as it could happen to you and you don't even realize it's happening to you.”This year, more than 23,000 kids will age out of the child welfare system, and many will face threats like homelessness, incarceration or trafficking. Studies in the U.S. and elsewhere consistently report that 50 to 90% of child sex trafficking victims have been involved in the child welfare system — something Featherstone believes is based on systemic issues that allow the dark world of sex trafficking to thrive and target the most vulnerable youth.“I just see this image of foster care being like those holding pens for the cattle before they get slaughtered: The slaughtering is basically turning 18 in the state of California,” says Featherstone. “The foster-care-to-pedophile pipeline is alive and well.”Featherstone was eventually picked up by police, arrested and charged with "immorality," which she later learned was prostitution. At 17 and a half she begged the judge to emancipate her, which he did, and with her newfound freedom she borrowed money from a friend and took a bus to Toronto. In less than a year she had become one of Canada’s most in-demand models, eventually moving to New York City to expand her career.Soon, Hollywood came knocking, and in addition to hit TV shows, she landed roles in films like The Wedding Singer and Con Air. Despite her success, Featherstone says she started drinking and struggled to find solid ground.“I was at the peak of my career as an actress, and a couple of really difficult instances happened at work, and I did not have the infrastructure to handle them. When they happened, I just collapsed and sought the comfort in homelessness,” says Featherstone. “I became homeless. I literally threw all my money away on anybody who would take it.
