What is a bone marrow transplant & its process?Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside some of the bones, such as hip and thigh bones. It contains stem cells which can develop into the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body, the white blood cells that fight infections, and the platelets that help with blood clotting. When a person’s body fails to produce these cells, the body requires a transplant to acquire new and healthy stem cells.A bone marrow transplant is a procedure that replaces a person’s faulty bone marrow stem cells with new and healthy stem cells from related or unrelated HLA matched donor. Before the transplant, the patient’s body is prepared. Any existing faulty marrow cells are killed through high doses of chemotherapy and possible radiation. This destroys the faulty stem cells that are present in the patient’s body and also suppresses body’s immune system so that it won’t attack the new stem cells after the transplant. A healthy part of stem cells is then infused to the patient’s blood which gets carried to the bone tissues. This later develops to healthy and new marrow cells. The process works similar to blood transfusion.8. How are bone marrow stem cells used for treatment? The healthy stem cells are extracted from the donor’s bone marrow and then infused to the recipient. The infused cells travel through the bloodstream, reach the bone marrow and develop to healthy and new marrow cells. For more FAQ'sQuick LinksCareersBlogPrivacy PolicyDisclaimerContactContact InfoHead Office – Chennai DATRI Blood Stem Cell Donors Registry, 12th Floor, Module number 1207 & 1208, Ticel Bio Park – Phase II, Taramani, CSIR Road, Chennai – 600113, India. +91 73057 91999 [email protected] with Us FacebookTwitterInstagramYoutubeLinkedinDrop Your Pin© 2020 All rights reserved | Developed by echoVME | Terms of Use | Privacy Policy X
