Applications I have worked on include searchengines, text categorization, filtering of email and web pages, miningof customer data, and a variety of others. My clients haveincluded both vendors and users of text processing software, and mywork with them has included mining data sets, analyzing manual andautomated text processing procedures, designing algorithms and systemarchitectures, performing competitive and strategic analysis,training, and ongoing advisory relationships. I also have servedas a consulting expert in a number of patent cases. Since 2006 the focus of my consulting has been shifting largely but not exclusively to the field of electronic discovery in legal cases. My work there falls roughly into three groups: Design of algorithms and person-machine processes for machine learning and statistical quality control. Expert witness work in discovery disputes. Academic research, in collaboration with university colleagues, on statistical and machine learning issues in e-discovery. I was a co-founder of the TREC Legal Track and creator of the CDIP (aka tobacco document) collection, the first large scale, publicly available test collection for e-discovery research. Biography: DavidD. Lewis became a full-time consultant in 2000, but he's doneconsulting work off and on since graduate school. He has workedwith a variety of organizations, including small and large companies, universities,and nonprofit organizations. From 1992 to 2000, Dave was aresearcher at AT&T Labs and Bell Labs, where he did research andbuilt prototype systems in the areas of information retrieval, machinelearning, natural language processing, and evaluation of informationsystems. He also advised AT&T business units and AT&TVentures on investments in technology and companies in theseareas.From 1991 to 1992, Dave Lewis was aresearch faculty member at the University of Chicago. He earned hisPh.D. in Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts atAmherst, under the direction of W. Bruce Croft. His Ph.D. dissertationwon the 1992 American Society for Information Science Doctoral ForumAward. Dave has published more than 75 scientific papers and 8 patents, and is afrequent invited speaker and tutorial presenter.
