D-DAY PRAYER PROJECTThe Effort to Add FDR’s Historical Presidential Prayer at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.Legislative History of the D-Day Prayer ProjectThis legislative initiative first started in early 2011, when OCA President Chris Long approached newly elected Congressman from Ohio’s 6th District, Lt. Colonel Bill Johnson (Air Force, Ret.), to add FDR’s D-Day Landing Prayer in its entirety at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. Congressman Johnson happily agreed. Soon afterwards, Ohio Christian Alliance was approached by Ohio U.S. Senator Rob Portman offering to be the Senate sponsor of the legislation. In a rare bi-partisan moment in the U.S. Congress, and on the eve of the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, the U.S. Senate granted unanimous consent for S 1044, The WWII Memorial Prayer Act. Two weeks later, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the measure, and sent it on to President Obama, who signed the bill on June 30, 2014.Funding PhaseSince that time, the Ohio Christian Alliance has been working with the Friends of the WWII Memorial and the U.S. Parks Service for site selection and design approval, and with the Friends of the WWII Memorial for the project fundraising effort. The legislation stipulates that it shall not be paid for by tax dollars, but rather with private donations. Many people are not aware that most of the monuments in Washington were paid for by private donations through the years. Donations from across the country have been collected toward the placement of the prayer, and OCA/CAA presented a $20,000 check to the Friends of the WWII Memorial on the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings. On that occasion, a temporary prayer plaque was dedicated to be on display at the Circle of Remembrance. The temporary prayer plaque served as a promissory note, a holding, until the remaining funds would be collected for the addition of the full prayer at the upgraded Circle of Remembrance.Although much appreciated small donations continued to come in from across the country, we were still a long way away from securing the needed funds. Believing that “through faith and patience we inherit the promise” (Hebrews 6:12), OCA President Chris Long called for prayer, assured that God was somehow going to provide all the resources needed to add the prayer to the WWII Memorial. Then, with time running out, the Lilly Endowment stepped forward with a $2 million grant.Construction and Dedication Phase (Update)Final plans have been approved by the Commission on Fine Arts, and construction should begin in July of 2022, with a dedication to be scheduled in November of 2022.The dedication ceremony of the D-Day Prayer at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. will be a time to honor all our veterans and give glory to God. The Christian Alliance of America is planning educational tours at the National and War Monuments, with the D-Day Prayer featured, led by historians Bill Federer, David Barton and other special guests. Due to inflationary costs, the price of materials has increased, i.e. the granite and other materials. We are currently collecting additional funds to meet the goal. Your contribution of any amount will be greatly appreciated."The Christian Alliance of America would like to thank the Lilly Endowment Inc. for their generous grant that will help make the addition of this historical Presidential prayer a reality at the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. We would also like to thank Senator Rob Portman and Congressman Bill Johnson of Ohio’s 6th District, sponsors of the legislation that made the addition of the prayer possible. The prayer’s addition will serve as a lasting tribute to the 16 million Americans who served us in WWII. President Roosevelt’s prayer articulated the great crusade that was underway to liberate millions suffering under tyranny. He addressed the concerns of those who had family members serving in the war effort, and paid honor to the fallen and those veterans who fought courageously in the conflict. It is only fitting that succeeding generations learn of this prayer that was offered at that most poignant moment in our nation’s history."Chris LongPresident, Christian Alliance of AmericaD-DAY PRAYERhttp://ddayprayerproject.org/wp-content/uploads/FDR_D-day_Prayer.mp3D-DAY PRAYER PLAQUEDonate to the D-Day Prayer ProjectDONATE NOWTo download a copy of the D-Day Prayer Project handout, please click the button below.Download/PrintFor all inquiries, please contact us here.© 2022 - D-Day Prayer Project.
