When it comes to parasports, it gets murkier, primarily because it is not as closely followed as regular sports and the masses are not even aware that there is something called parasports. Over the last couple of years, there has been some outcry against the corrupt Paralympics body, which led to its losing official recognition. However, this was soon restored due to political pressures. As an amazingly small team of 10 para athletes participate in Paralympics 2012, Dorodi Sharma of D.N.I.S. takes a look at the abysmal situation.Interview “If we ignore youth with disabilities, can India achieve its demographic dividend?”: Meera ShenoyMeera Shenoy is the Founder C.E.O. of Youth4Jobs and a N.C.P.E.D.P.-Shell Helen Keller Awardee. News Network, India: When Murlikant Petkar won a gold medal in 50 metres freestyle swimming with a world record at the Paralympics in Heidelberg in 1972, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold in either Paralympics or Olympics. Yet, his name finds no mention in any official record of the country! This is not just tragic but a horrific testimony to the state of affairs prevailing in para sports in India.228 deaths in Asha Kiran since 2005D.N.I.S. News Network, India: In a shocking revelation, the Delhi Government has stated in an affidavit filed in the High Court that 228 inmates of Asha Kiran, a Government run shelter home for children and adults with mental disabilities, have died since 2005! The shelter home is in the middle of an inquiry and Public Interest Litigation (P.I.L.) for human rights abuses, overcrowding and unhygienic living conditions that have allegedly led to several deaths.N.C.P.E.D.P. to organise National Convention on Youth with DisabilitiesD.N.I.S. News Network, India: National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (N.C.P.E.D.P.) is organising a National Convention on Youth with Disabilities in December. The objective of the Convention is to identify and inspire the next generation leadership of not just the Indian disability sector but also those who would be agents of change in other fields and to expose them to the social sector movement in India, including disability and other allied fields.New law in the offing to prevent schools from discriminating against ‘weak’ studentsD.N.I.S. News Network, India: Ministry of Human Resource Development is planning to bring a new law which will prevent schools from discriminating against �weak� students. This will hopefully come as a welcome relief to many students, including those with disabilities, who are perceived to be poor performers and are often expelled, transferred or barred by schools from appearing for board examinations to ensure that the performance record of the school is not affected. The draft law however does not specify what punitive measures will be taken for violation, if any.No blanket ban on students with upper limb impairment in medical course, High CourtD.N.I.S. News Network, India: The Bombay High Court has ruled against the blanket embargo on students with upper limb disabilities from taking admission into M.B.B.S. course.In an interim order, a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Nitin Jamdar directed the Director of Medical Education and Research to consider such applicants as eligible and fit for the medical course.Deaf people to be able to text for help during emergencyD.N.I.S. News Network, India: Delhi Police is planning to launch a helpline service where one could send a text message (S.M.S.) for help during emergency. This will especially help deaf people who till now were not able to access the existing emergency helpline number �100�. This new step comes after a deaf person wrote to the Delhi Police on the issue.N.H.R.C. to organise National Conference on leprosyD.N.I.S News Network, India: National Human Rights Commission (N.H.R.C.) is organising a National Conference on leprosy in New Delhi on September 18. The objective is to discuss the stigma and discrimination still faced by people affected with leprosy and the State�s duty to take affirmative action to enable persons affected by leprosy to live their life with dignity.Wadhwani Foundation’s initiative to train & recruit 13,500 people with disabilitiesD.N.I.S. News Network, India: The Wadhwani Foundation and I.S.D.C. (a joint venture between I.L.&F.S. and the National Skill Development Corporation) have launched a country wide initiative to train and recruit 13,500 people with disabilities in a 3 year intensive advocacy, training and hiring campaign. It aims to create an atmosphere of increased opportunity and social acceptance of educated people with disabilities.D.U. proposes exclusive accommodation for students with disabilities!D.N.I.S. News Network, India: Rather than making its entire campus and accommodation accessible, Delhi University (D.U.) is reportedly contemplating to set up �exclusive� accommodation for students with disabilities. This not only goes against the spirit of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (C.R.P.D.) but also defeats the purpose of mainstreaming disability.Golf camp for people with disabilitiesD.N.I.S. News Network, India: Golf for All Foundation (G.F.A.F.) conducted a golfing camp in New Delhi for children between the ages of 14 and 20 in a bid to promote inclusion of people with disabilities and making golf more accessible as a sport.
