Infinite Wishes ??️‍⚧️?Is a weblog by Emma Humphries 28 Mar 2022 » Postmortem of an AeroTech I200W failure at Snow RanchPostmortem review of the failure of a AeroTech I200W due to operator error The afternoon of February 5th, at Snow Ranch in Stanislaus County, California, I flew my AeroTech Mega Initiator on an AeroTech 29mm I200 RMS which had a failure.Having reviewed my phone camera footage of the launch, the reason for the failure was a premature ejection charge firing, fractions of a second after the motor’s propellant grain ignited.I think the root cause of the failure was leaving out the forward seal disk when assembling the motor. This component is combined with an o-ring seal which prevents the premature ignition of the ejection charge. But there was no burn through of the case. There was some scorching on the nylon shock cord consistent with the grain burning from both sides.via AeroTech websiteLessons learned: Don’t assemble reloads in the field if you are rushed or uncertain.Build the day before launch, or bring or buy a DMS motorWe had a bunch of folks flying high power and the pads were full. I rushed my prep.I could had purchased an equivalent DMS motor from the vendor on-site. Ask for helpI had questions and needed clarification on the instructions packed with the RMS reload. I could have asked a neighbor if they had time to clear up my questions. Fly another day if you’re unsureI could have launched the rocket with a properly assembled motor another day.I had to make repairs to get this rocket flying again. HPR is already expensive. I lucked out and someone found the video camera which was flung out of its mount. I could had avoided this with a little patience. 27 Mar 2022 » On accountablityWhy I'm glad Will Smith slapped the taste out of Chris Rock's mouth. If more people were slapped after they said ableist things, after they propose transphobic laws, after they plan to make abortion illegal, after demanding abuse of immigrants, and after defending cops who murder Black people, we’d have less fascists.Read Mona Eltahawy’s story about the time she decked a guy who groped her at a club, and why she decided to punch him.Somehow this was published without a layout. I also realize that “actor slaps asshole comedian over abelist comment about their spouse” is eons ago in internet time. 27 Mar 2022 » Crosseyed and MasklessThe personal risk assessment is the political. The care crisis is that people don't care.We decided not to attend WisCon in person this year. Cyn’s the co-lead for the Online Team, organizing the Discord that all attendees will be using for the long weekend, and can do her work remotely. What settled it for us was the collapse of mask mandates. When the data supports the airborne vector model, not wearing a mask is foolish. But this goes back to how Calvinism poisoned the West, and wearing a mask would suggest that one is not one of The Elect, and if one has one of God’s limited favors, why would one need a mask, eh prole?Yesterday we went to the City to have lunch and so Cyn could order new eyeglasses. Unless you were part of a handful of shoppers, or working, most people went unmasked. On the ferry back to Oakland, the crew constantly had to ask people to wear a mask.Public transit has been a refuge from the maskless for awhile, and the Federal rule requiring masks on transit and in terminals (including the Ferry Building in SF) expires this April.Mask mandates are a minimal act of care, and both Cynthia and I are at higher risk from a “breakthrough” case of COVID-19, despite our economic and racial status. When we hear mask mandates are ending, we hear “people with disablities don’t count.”“Our existence is political,” Cyn reminded me.When the Alameda County Board of Supervisors removed the mask mandate earlier this year, I asked our County Supervisor’s office what it would take to get it back. The supervisor’s chief of staff said the two urban members of the board support it, but the three rural and suburban supervisors oppose them and want “normalcy.”Normalcy is death and suffering, and the suburbs crave it.In better news, Cyn and I did get to see Snapped Ankles play a “secret show” Friday night, and most people were masked (including the band.) 25 Mar 2022 » Fighting tyrants is not cancel cultureThe horrible thing is that Putin declaring any opposition to him 'cancel culture' might work.Anne Applebaum, who thinks the two greatest threats to the West are Putin and calling out J.K. Rowling’s transphobia, was caught out today: “Putin comments about JK Rowling suggest a deeply bizarre degree of acquaintance with American partisan discourse. Does he watch Fox news?” – Anne ApplebaumPutin’s comment was comparing sanctions and armed resistance to his war crime of invading Ukraine to ‘cancelling’ J.K. Rowling. I hate this timeline. The genius of the “cancel culture” as a panic is it triggers the terror of being held accountable in people. After #racefail, there was a whole group of white writers who suddenly decided they couldn’t attend WisCon out of fear of being “next.”Putin calling the sanctions and resistance to his invasion “cancel culture” is putting a bug in the brains of people who fear accountablity can hurt them: “you might be next.”That’s because our culture’s been infected by Calvinism, and full of people who consider themselves “the elect” which enables them to do great evil because under Calvinism, you aren’t allowed to question them, and to admit error undermines one’s claim to be in “the elect.” 24 Mar 2022 » Notes: Seeing a Cat Like a State & That Owosekun/Detmer feelingA few notes on March 24, 2022: cat names, official titles, and Trek is gaySeeing a Cat like a StateMarkdown, one of the two feral rescue cats Cynthia and I adopted last Summer, has many names.Their full name is Markdown Prescott. They are short limbed, sturdy, and stalwart, so I often call them Samwise. They are also sleek, mostly grey, and a little plump, so they are also called Otter Pop.To our vet’s office, they are Markdown Gonsalves because the vet’s office software keeps the pet’s name as PET NAME, ACCOUNT HOLDER LAST NAME and the cats are registered under Cynthia’s name.Even a cat cannot escape legibility. The gender of the day is “Fight me, you coward!” “Imagining the future where non-binary people get to choose ‘Opponent’ from a drop-down menu of official titles when buying a plane ticket.” – Avery AlderThat Owosekun/Detmer FeelingThere was a moment in last week’s Star Trek: Discovery where one of the bridge crew, Keyla Detmer volunteers to pilot a shuttle craft on what would most likely be a one-way trip. The camera switches to Joann Owosekun, another bridge officer and the expression on her face (and I’m trying to find a gif of it) made Cynthia and I gasp.Owosekun and Detmer’s characters are friends on the show. Fandom has seized on them as a ‘ship, as fandom does.Owosekun’s reaction, her fear made plain on her face, visible a moment before cutting back to Detmer, felt like an acknowledgement. There are canon queer relationships and families on the current Star Trek shows, including trans and non-binary actors in non-binary and transgender roles. But that scene was a recognition that even when it wasn’t canon, Trek was queer.
