GM HeritageHeritage of General Motors and its brands. We are committed to preserving the rich history of General Motors brands while providing a foundation for continued innovation into the future. Story of GM Founder, William DurantThe story of General Motors begins in Flint, Michigan, where, in 1886, William Crapo “Billy” Durant and Josiah Dallas Dort formed the Flint Road Cart Company and began building horse-drawn carriages. The company would become known as the Durant-Dort Carriage Company. It would grow to become one of the world’s largest carriage manufacturers, developing an international network of distributors and introducing such concepts as vertical integration and model differentiation to meet customer wants and need.Durant was quiet and charismatic, earning a reputation as a super salesman and accomplished business leader. In 1904, he was asked to take over general management of the fledgling Buick Motor Co., which had been brought to Flint the year prior. Leveraging his knowledge, talents, and connections, in just four years, Durant developed Buick into the nation’s highest volume automobile producer in just four years.Durant’s success with Buick led to the creation General Motors on September 16, 1908. Three years later, he founded Chevrolet, and grew it to a position of market leadership in just three short years. Durant left General Motors in early 1921, but his vision and ambition laid the groundwork for GM to become the largest industrial company in the world.Learn More The first 100 years of General Motors Highlights from the GM Heritage Vehicle Collection The GM Heritage Collection is made up of approximately 600 cars and trucks.
