Trained primarily as a vocalist, I frame my practice around opera, which I see both as a contemporary cross-disciplinary form of time-based art and the tradition of performing stories with music. I’m interested in how sound integrates with new media and projection design, in the spirit of visual music. A diverse experience within the arts enhances my strengths as a collaborator and educator.Songs are at the core of music. Mine often bypass text or grammar by drawing upon vocalise, glossolalia, and paralanguage. Traditional lyrics are okay, too. I have focused on bringing into sound LGBTQIA legacies, especially those interrupted by HIV and AIDS—Arthur Russell, Lance T. Briggs, and John Bernd for example. I’m privileged to have lent my voice to amplify multiple feminist and trans-diasporic narratives, through longterm associations with Bill T. Jones, Shana Moulton, Miguel Gutierrez, and Anthony Braxton. My activities as a cultural producer are based in engaging history as a tool to build community. I have presented numerous programs for New York institutions such as The Kitchen, ISSUE Project Room, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art. These institutions have, in turn, supported my development as an artist. View fullsize Photo by Eric McNatt
