This fund will support field trips to Mālama Learning Center’s ecosystem restoration projects for West O`ahu schools that may not have the funds for these hands-on experiences.“Al was a fighter for the underdog and always believed that everyone should have a fair chance to thrive and succeed regardless of their financial circumstances. This fund honors his values,” said Elden Esmeralda, Board President of Mālama Learning Center and former principal of Kapolei High School who was mentored by Mr. Nagasako.Proceeds from Calabash & Cooks will benefit the Mālama Learning Center, a community nonprofit that brings art, science, conservation and culture together to promote sustainable living throughout Hawai‘i.Current sponsors for the event include:• Presenting Sponsor: Hawaiian Electric• Mōhala Sponsor: Island Energy Services• Mu’o Sponsor: Ko Olina Resort, Kaiser Permanente, Wai`anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center• Lau Sponsor: The Gentry Companies• Liko Sponsor: Embassy Suites by Hilton O`ahu Kapolei, Residence Inn by Marriott O`ahu Kapolei• Kupu Sponsor: Corteva Agriscience, Hunt Companies, R.M. I enjoyed my first take-out order so much, that I ordered more take-out just a few weeks later!Mixed PakoraPakora is veggies, chicken, or cheese dipped in batter and fried. You can get all 3 varieties in the Mixed Pakora (if I had to choose, the veggies were my fave - the chicken was a little tough to eat).Malai KoftaThe Malai Kofta consists of croquettes made from cottage cheese, potatoes, and other vegetables in a flavorful sauce. I was hoping for more of a crunch from the croquettes (if I order this again I would ask if they are able to serve them separately from the sauce), but I really enjoyed the sauce.Palak PaneerA popular Indian fave, the Palak Paneer is a mixture of spinach and cottage cheese.Chicken Tikka MasalaMy fave Indian dish is the Chicken Tikka Masala. Roasted tandoor chicken is just so tender, and I love the the delicious sauce!Vegetable SamosaThe Vegetable Samosa was filled with peas, potatoes, and herbs. The pastry was perfectly crisp and the filling was delicious. I'd want an entire plate of these!Don't forget some breads to dip in and sop up all the sauces!Onion KulchaGarlic NaanKamana Kitchen Hilo1235 Kilauea Ave Ste 180Hilo, HI 96720(808) 933-8570 Read MoreNo commentsLabels:big island, dining, hawaii,Hawaii mom travels, hilo, indian food, indian restaurants, travel, visit big island, visit hilo, visit island of hawaii September 26, 2022 K.bay Bros Fish & IcebyNatEmail ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to PinterestK.bay Bros Fish & Ice recently celebrated their first year of business with discounted poke bowls and a raffle drawing. I am a huge fan of K.bay Bros - they have the freshest tasting poke and the people who work here are sooooo nice!I always get the poke made with previous frozen ahi because it's a lot cheaper in price, yet to me the taste and texture is just as good as fresh ahi (no strings, not fishy). You can buy poke by the pound, or as a poke bowl .. I like to buy the poke bowls because it comes with furikake and unagi sauce (for select poke varieties). You have the option of one or two scoops of rice. And another reason why I like to get my poke fix here is because they have a freezer full of sherbert made by Scoop Scoops HI! The K.Bay Bros Special is a must-try!____________________________K.BAY BROS FISH & ICE46-028 Kawa Street808-235-0858 Read MoreNo commentsLabels:kaneohe, oahu, poke, poke bowlVisit Florence: Dario Cecchini's Officina della BisteccabyGemEmail ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to PinterestIf you've watched Netflix's Chef's Table, you may be familiar with Dario Cecchini, a world famous butcher in Italy.People from around the world flock to his butcher shop and dine in the Officina della Bistecca kitchen, where "Carne Diem" is the mantra, and nose to tail cooking has been the norm.Upon entering the Butcher shop, guests will see Dario himself, as he warmly welcomes and greets everyone, and graciously takes photos with fans. Tuscan Bread with Burro del Chianti aka "butter" aka lardo is passed around to the delight of many. And I was even more delighted when I sat at the table and saw an entire jar of the lardo and more bread. Let's just say I ate many, many pieces of bread and lardo. What an indulgence!Meat lovers will rejoice in the menu at Officina della Bistecca (although there is a vegetarian menu). I don't eat a lot of meat, but I couldn't go to Dario Cecchni's legendary eatery without trying the legendary meat.We were extremely fortunate to have his "right hand," Riccardo Ricci, dining with us to give some additional insight (and how-to-eat intel) during the evening.Vegetables and Olive OilBeef TartareTuscan BeansSeared Rump CarpaccioEtruscan CutBaked Potatoes (Riccardo told us we should put the lardo on!)Panzanese SteakBone in Rib and Bistecca FiorentinaThe star of the evening was the Bistecca Fiorentina. Dario Cecchini held a funeral for for this popular cut back in 2001, when it was banned due to mad cow disease. This event gave him even more notoriety. At the dinner, the cook made a big speech about the Bistecca Fiorentina with great passion.I did try all of the meats, and I enjoyed the Bistecca Fiorentina the most.Olive Oil CakeThe evening ends with coffee or grappa! The ambience is casual, fun, and lively, and Dario greets every table before he leaves for the night.Dinner at Officina della Bistecca was definitely a memorable experience!Dario Cecchini's Officina della BisteccaVia XX Luglio, 11Panzano in Chianti (Fi)+39 055 852020 Read MoreNo commentsLabels:dining,Hawaii mom travels, italy, travel, visit Italy September 23, 2022 Argiolas Winery 6 Mani EventbyGemEmail ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to PinterestNa`auhad the honor of participating in a 6 Mani Event at Argiolas Winery to honor the 30th vintage of Turriga. According to their Instagram page, thereafter they will continue to offer take out meals, private parties, specific calendar days for 'restaurant' service, and cooking classes. I hope they will continue to offer some of their signature dishes like the ahi katsu and Mile High Waialae Pie!____________________________3660 on the Rise808-737-1177www.3660ontherise.com Read MoreNo commentsLabels:dining, hawaii, hawaii dining, kaimuki, oahu, oahu diningVisit Hilo: Scicchitano's Pizzeria RevisitedbyGemEmail ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to PinterestNearly a year ago I tried Scicchitano's Pizzeriafor the first time. I was underwhelmed by the experience, but knew I would give them another chance eventually, since they had just opened, and I'm sure they were still working out some bugs.I recently did take-out twice over the past few months:Scicchitano's SpecialThe Scicchitano's Special was topped with an Italian vinaigrette base, proscuitto, sopressato, Pecorino Romano, Provolone, mozzarella, red onion, and arugula. It was a really tasty pizza, and the crust was much better this time around.Fried PicklesGarlic Parmesan FriesI enjoyed the sides. The fries were nice and crispy, and so were the pickles (my friend the thought the pickles were too crispy).Caesar SaladPhilly CheesesteakCalzoneI tried the Special of the Day Calzone, which had mushrooms and sausage. Although I thought the calzone could've used more filling, it was tasty.Online ordering makes things easy, unless what you want to order is not offered online, in which case you'll have to call (eg I had to call in for the Philly Cheesesteak and find out what the Calzone of the Day was).Service is super friendly, and I'm so glad these visits were much better than the first visit. I enjoyed the food so much more!Scicchitano's Pizzeria2100 Kanoelehua AveHilo, HI 96720 Read MoreNo commentsLabels:big island,Hawaii mom travels, hilo, island of hawaii, pizza, travel, visit big island, visit hilo Older PostsHomeSubscribe to:Posts (Atom)Featured PostVisit Chicago: Skydeck ChicagoMahalo to Skydeck for hosting admission.
